Meet the cast

Astrid Watts - Prospera

Astrid Watts - Prospera

Astrid Watts - Prospera

Astrid’s love of Shakespeare began at the age of seven after her primary school teacher told the class the story of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She dashed for the dressing-up box, snatched the fairy costume and started bossing her classmates. This inspired a lifelong love of Shakespeare and acting and, as a teacher of English and Drama, passing on this passion to generations of her students. The highlight of her career was taking her production of Henry V to Stratford to perform on the RSC stage after winning The Shakespeare Schools’ Festival in 2008.

Helen Seymour - Miranda

Astrid Watts - Prospera

Astrid Watts - Prospera

Helen made her debut aged five, starring as a Tree, in layers of flammable green crepe paper. Peaking early, she transitioned into writing and directing aged eight, staging a cosmic epic inspired by Gustav Holst’s The Planets. Helen’s school years spanned the grim trials of The Crucible, the glittery demands of Prince Charming and a witty detour through Much Ado About Nothing. At university she reached a comedic zenith as Mrs. Drudge in The Real Inspector Hound. A founding member of Bassinaud Players, Helen has appeared in every production, usually being dragged kicking and screaming into the role of ingenue.

Irene Edwards - Ariel

Astrid Watts - Prospera

Irene Edwards - Ariel

Irene began performing at the age of four and, much to the delight (and occasional concern) of those around her, has hardly stopped since! She joined Fairford Amateur Dramatic Society in 1995, appearing as Sally Smith in Me and My Girl, Muriel Wicksteed in Habeas Corpus, and Fay Hubbard in A Chorus of Disapproval. She is a seasoned pantomime Principal Boy, though she did once play the Village Idiot! Beyond the stage, Irene has also appeared on television in Midsommer Murders and Casualty. Since joining Bassinaud Players she has performed as the wonderfully eccentric Madame Arcati in Blithe Spirit and Mistress Ford in The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Tony Carter - Caliban

Jonathan Fitton - Stephano

Irene Edwards - Ariel

Tony made his stage debut at the age of seven, playing the beast in Beauty and the Beast. After many school performances he studied drama at college before joining Knutsford Little Theatre, acting in various plays and pantomimes. After moving to Sheffield, Tony joined South Yorkshire Opera working both backstage and as a chorus member at The Crucible Theatre. After moving to France he spent several years with Théâtre Tricolor in Charente Maritime before helping to found Bassinaud Players in 2022. Tony directed our first Shakespeare production and has acted in all of them, as well as 2024’s Blithe Spirit.

Cate Evans - Trinculo

Jonathan Fitton - Stephano

Jonathan Fitton - Stephano

Cate made her stage debut as a shrub aged five and has never looked back. She went on to study drama at school and with various theatre troupes in her native Cardiff and was also a member of the National Youth Theatre of Wales. Cate has acted in and directed plays, soap opera and pantomime. Cate has been settled in France for over 30 years, though is new to the Charente region and to Bassinaud Players.

Jonathan Fitton - Stephano

Jonathan Fitton - Stephano

Jonathan discovered acting around the age of 12, firstly at school as King Rat in Dick Whittington and with a local drama group, both in pantomime and his first Shakespeare, Twelfth Night. However university, and thirty years of a career with unpredictable hours, left no time amateur theatre.

Since joining Bassinaud Players in 2022 Jonathan has performed as the spirit Puck in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Malvolio in Twelfth Night, and Frank Ford in The Merry Wives of Windsor, as well as the unforgettable Norman in Ayckbourn’s Round and Round the Garden and Dr Bradman in Blithe Spirit.

Okke Verstrenge - Alonso

Okke Verstrenge - Alonso

Okke Verstrenge - Alonso

Okke started acting as a hobby in 2014 and hasn’t looked back. He has been in two feature films, 15 short movies, and had the lead role in an Immersive Theatre Experience (Prison Escape) for five years. He’s also been in numerous TV commercials, two TV series and several music videos. His proudest moment was to be invited to perform the Anthony Hopkins role in a stage production of The Father.

Okke is Dutch and currently the only non-native English speaker in our company but has really enjoyed the experience; as Orsino in Twelfth Night, George Page in The Merry Wives of Windsor and the big bad wolf in our Christmas sketch show!

Paula Cragg - Sebastiana

Okke Verstrenge - Alonso

Okke Verstrenge - Alonso

Paula’s acting ‘career’ began in the 1990’s with three PTA pantomimes, playing principal boy!  After moving to France she appeared in the 2019 Pillac Variety Show performing her first Cancan. In 2023 she ‘Monty Pythoned’ the heck out of two coconut shells and danced her second cancan. Since joining Bassinaud players, Paula has performed in Blithe Spirit, The Merry Wives of Windsor and Under Milk Wood. Last Christmas she appeared in our sketch show as Little Red Riding Hood and Eartha Kitt! Paula has also appeared as a rock in AFBR’s Around the World! She’s nothing if not adaptable!

Ken Robson - Antonio

Okke Verstrenge - Alonso

Sian Jennings - Gonzala

Ken’s acting debut was 60 years ago, playing Tom in Tom Sawyer! 20 years later, after courses in acting, voiceover and screenwriting, he made his professional debut as ‘Customer 1’ in the Marley Homecare Staff Training video! A few minor roles followed whilst volunteering in youth theatre at Trestle Arts Base in St Albans. However, only in France did Ken belatedly find his theatrical métier playing smallish roles in our productions. Highlights include Egeus/Tom Snout in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Don Pedro in Much Ado About Nothing, Antonio in Twelfth Night and the hilarious Dr Caius in 2025’s The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Sian Jennings - Gonzala

Sian Jennings - Gonzala

Sian Jennings - Gonzala

Sian’s first school performance was as ‘Fox’ in Toad of Toad Hall, in front of Sir Lawrence Olivier. She was so immersed in looking for her mother in the audience she fell off the stage! Sian’s passion led to a diploma in acting, before completing a BA in Drama and Performance at Worcester University. Here she developed a passion for full mask theatre and filming. Sian later volunteered with Vamos community theatre, supporting young adults with disabilities. Having seen their transformation through drama, she went on to do an MA and became a Dramatherapist.

Jason Fryer - Ferdinand

Sian Jennings - Gonzala

Jason Fryer - Ferdinand

Jason began performing in high school musicals in Australia at the tender age of 12 with the lead role in Oliver. After a long break, in 2018 he took a one year acting course at the Darlo Drama Academy in Sydney, performing in Noel Coward’s Private Lives.

Jason joined Bassinaud Players in 2022, firstly as the hapless vet Tom in Alan Ayckbourn’s Round and Round the Garden before becoming a regular in our Shakespeare productions. He was Claudio in Much Ado about Nothing, the Sea Captain in Twelfth Night and the young lover Fenton in the Merry Wives of Windsor.

Naomi Leaver - Bosun

Sian Jennings - Gonzala

Jason Fryer - Ferdinand

In a previous life Naomi was a contemporary dancer before studying for a degree in English and Drama. She considers herself very privileged that aspects of theatre, performing and drama have threaded through her professional and personal life. And so it continues, having joined Bassinaud Players in 2025 and taking part in our production of Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood.

We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep.
